What does it mean for a product to be organic?
According to QAI, organic refers to produce and other ingredients that are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or ionizing radiation.
Organic production systems are managed to respond to site-specific conditions. This means integrating cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that generate resource cycling, promote ecological balance, and restore biodiversity.
Companies that handle or process organic ingredients before they reach the production site must also be certified.

What are the requirements for organic personal care products?
For personal care products such as cosmetics, rinse-off and leave-on formulas, and personal hygiene products, QAI provides organic certification through the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), as well as through NSF/ANSI 305: Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) does not define or regulate the term "organic" in regards to cosmetics, body care, or personal care products.
Instead, the USDA regulates the term "organic" regarding the agricultural products through the National Organic Program (NOP).
A cosmetic, body care product, or personal care product must meet the USDA/NOP organic product, handling, processing, and labeling standards for its agricultural ingredients in order to be eligible for certification under the NOP regulations.
The operations that produce the organic agricultural ingredients, as well as the handlers and manufacturer of the final product must all be certified by a USDA-accredited organic certifying body.
